What to Expect at Your First Counselling Session

A plain guide to your first counselling appointment: what you will talk about, how to prepare and what happens next.

By Brenda McCarty · November 1, 2026

Booking a first counselling session takes courage. Knowing what to expect can make it feel a little easier.

Before you arrive

You will receive an intake form through Jane. Fill in what you are comfortable with. If you are coming to the office, plan to arrive a few minutes early.

What you will talk about

  • What brought you to counselling now
  • What you hope will be different
  • Any past counselling experience
  • Questions you have about the process

You set the pace

There is no right way to start. You do not need to tell your whole story in the first hour. Brenda will check in about how things feel and what would help most.

After the session

Many people feel relieved, tired or both. Together you will decide whether to book another session and how often to meet.
